Accreditation Framework

The Road Safety GB Academy has developed a learning framework for road safety practitioners.

Our RSGB awards support road safety professionals who want to grow their expertise and make a real impact on safe, sustainable, and healthy travel.

The Academy provides structured learning, expert-led courses, and ongoing CPD opportunities, ensuring learners stay at the forefront of road safety practice.

The learning framework offers two RSGB awards:

  • RSGB Certificate in Delivery of Safe, Sustainable and Healthy Travel
  • RSGB Diploma in Delivery and Management of Safe, Sustainable and Healthy Travel

The awards formally recognise the awareness, knowledge and experience of road safety professionals.

RSGB Certificate in Delivery of Safe, Sustainable and Healthy Travel

To achieve the Certificate, learners will complete four core courses (shown in red) and choose two additional courses (shown in blue).

If learners have completed any of the required courses within the last five years, these will count towards the Certificate and do not need to be repeated. If a course was completed more than five years ago, it must be refreshed.

The only exception is the Road Safety Practitioner Foundation Course. This is a four-day course, but if it was completed more than five years ago, learners only need to complete a one-day refresher to update their knowledge.

Then RSGB Certificate in Delivery of Safe, Sustainable and Healthy Travel, aims to deliver for the learner the following outcomes:

Awareness of:

  • How their role fits within, and interacts with the Safe System approach to road safety
  • The role of partners in Safe System
  • Why behavioural change interventions need to be based on behaviour theories
  • The importance of using behavioural change techniques
  • The importance of using statistical evidence to support the development of interventions
  • Learning theories and their use
  • Common causes of collisions
  • The importance of promoting safe, active forms of transport
  • The importance of robust evaluation
  • Where to access road safety research.

Knowledge of:

  • The importance of, and how to complete a risk assessment based on the relevant legislation
  • The role impairment has on road user behaviour
  • The importance of using behavioural change techniques
  • How to use learning theories when delivering an educational intervention
  • How to effectively use digital technology to maximise the learning experience
  • How to use active learning and client-centred approaches
  • How to plan and deliver an educational intervention
  • How transport impacts on health and the environment
  • Routes to further development.

Assessment of learning
All Road Safety GB courses include an assessment. For most courses, this will take the form of a written assignment, which will be reviewed and marked by the course tutor.

If a written assessment isn’t suitable, we’re happy to arrange an interview-based alternative with the tutor.

Assessment of learning
All Road Safety GB courses include an assessment. For most courses, this will take the form of a written assignment, which will be reviewed and marked by the course tutor.

If a written assessment isn’t suitable, we’re happy to arrange an interview-based alternative with the tutor.

Learners working towards the Diploma will also be required to complete a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates how they have applied the learning to a project or the programme of work. The evidence will be assessed by an independent panel who will consider the relevance and application of the learning.

General Points

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)
If the learner for either the Certificate or the Diploma has gained a formal qualification that matches the learning outcomes for a course (either a compulsory course or optional course), the qualification will be accepted in lieu of course attendance.

Continued Professional Development (CPD)
To keep your qualification current, we ask learners to complete at least one day of CPD each year. This could be a Road Safety GB course, attending the National Road Safety Conference or another relevant conference, or learning opportunity that supports your role.
